Pharmacists hand out the drugs as prescribed by the doctor and helps the patients in understanding the dosage of those drugs. The job is a very responsible one and may involve long working hours.
To be a pharmacist the minimum educational qualification is Pharm.D. There are various pharmacy programs that impart coursework in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry, effects of drugs on body, toxicology and pharmacy administration. Apart from these, pharmacists must procure the license after clearing North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam that is administered by National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. The license is transferable within states though California is an exception to this.
Pharmacists can work in hospitals, health care centers and may own a pharmacy in partnership if they are working in independent pharmacies. Chances of promotions are good in chain drug stores. Pharmaceutical industry promotes their pharmacists to marketing and sales department, research and quality control.
The job profile of a pharmacist depends on the area s/he is working in. In a drug store the responsibilities would me more managerial whereas in a pharmaceutical industry a pharmacist can do research and analysis. In some hospitals pharmacists are supposed to make diet plan and monitor the symptoms of the patients.
